Data Centres: A Whole Lot of Hot Air

ABSTRACT

There are currently more than 70 data centres in Ireland, and these are responsible for approximately 14% of national electricity consumption. This figure is forecast to exceed 25% by 2030, prompting concerns about sustainability of supply. This seminar will focus on the challenges associated with the thermal management of data centres, review contemporary and next-generation cooling practices, and examine the prospects for the reuse and recovery of waste energy.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Lectures in mechanical engineering at the School of Engineering, University of Limerick. He is also Assistant Dean for Research in the Faculty of Science & Engineering, and a Funded Investigator in the CONNECT Centre for Future Networks. His research interests lie in the thermal sciences, with an emphasis on energy management, particularly for applications in the areas of electronic and photonics systems.
