A two day International Design workshop will take place on Thursday September 6th and Friday 7th at the Bernal Institute, University of Limerick.  23 final year students from the MSc Life Science & Technology program, TU Delft (Delft University of Technology) will attend.  These students are the top 3 winning teams selected from the TU Delft 2018 Master Design Competition on July 2nd last.  This annual Master Design Competition was set up to develop technical and economical design skills, to develop creativity and innovation in finding solutions and to foster good team work.

This year’s competition was a collaborative project between the Bernal Institute and TU Delft, participants were asked to prepare a techno-economic evaluation of technological concepts derived from Bernal Institute Research.  TU Delft provided coaches, along with a structured design project framework, and tight (weekly) supervision during the 8 week project, while Bernal researchers acted as scientific advisors and principal investigator.

The groups elaborated on two different topics, BioWind around renewable carbon fiber, and BioPiezo around biopiezoelectric energy harvesting.  Five groups of 4 or 5 students worked on each topic.   The groups delivered a design report at mid-term as well as a final design report, all of the reports were reviewed by the Delft and Bernal experts.

The winners are invited to Limerick on September 6th and 7th to discuss next steps in the present workshop, to get more familiar with the actual players, and to get to know the opportunities that the Bernal Institute and UL offer.   The workshop is supported by BE-Basic Foundation, BioEngineering Institute of TUD, and UL Faculty of  Science & Engineering/Bernal Institute.

The objective is to progress the option of further commercialisation, have the concepts challenged by a number of bright and well prepared engineering students in a number of applications and get overall a better feeling of what it takes to become successful. Thus creating a more conducive environment towards entrepreneurship.
